Nonprofit copywriter and strategist: How did I get here?
For almost 10 years, I have worked in the non-profit sector with several roles to my name. I’ve been a media literacy educator, workshop facilitator, program coordinator, grant writer, project manager and more. No matter the role, it was my mission to make room for different voices and perspectives. Why? I knew firsthand what happens when there is no room.
During some of those years, I noticed that many people didn’t show up to any events or gatherings. They wouldn’t enter contests or sign up for newsletters, a common experience in the non-profit sector. At first I thought they were the problem. I thought they were misunderstanding our help.
But with more experience and reflection, I realized that we were the problem. We were not speaking with them. We were speaking to them. Their needs, wants and pain points were totally ignored. I learned a valuable lesson: availability does not mean accessibility. When I understood that, a lightbulb went off in my head. I knew what I had to do: I had to tell them a different story.
So that’s what I did. I started reaching out to them in their community spaces and using language that they understood. Also, I started involving more community members in the work, events and other collaborative endeavors. Around this time, I started volunteering at a Canadian youth magazine to ground the realization in practice. Additionally, I went back to school to study professional writing in order to learn how to produce results on paper. So, all of the research papers, digital stories, editing and curriculum development that I was creating allowed me to find storytelling and make into the career I have today.
Storytelling matters: Why do I stay?
It’s simple: I love a great story. As a naturally curious person, the process of crafting one is fun and interesting to me! From website copy to blog posts, I truly enjoy the experience with my clients. My years of facilitating taught me how to ask great questions; my years of coordinating programs taught me how to build key relationships. When I use these skills together, I’m able to help set the tone for the actual process of crafting compelling content such as stories and key messages.
